The year 2023 with a bar chart and logos of Skrill, Neteller, Payz, AstroPay and MiFinity

2023 brought market launches and a name change at our providers: ecoPayz became Payz, Skrill went live in Ontario and AstroPay received an Isle of Man licence. We’ve picked seven events, each dated and backed by a primary source or the trade press.

Which events mattered in 2023?

2023 timeline: 18 April Payz rebrand, 10 May Skrill in Ontario, 24 May AstroPay Isle of Man licence, 18 August AstroPay and Tottenham, 2 October Paysafe award for Skrill wallet, 23 November MiFinity award

We found no sourced 2023 news for Luxon Pay, so we left that provider out. Neteller only appears together with Skrill.

What happened at Payz?

On 18 April 2023, LCB reported that ecoPayz would become Payz, with a new name, logo and website. The business model stays largely the same: existing accounts keep their login details, and only the web address changes. Sending and receiving money still works in more than 50 currencies. Payz announced new products without naming any. We found no statement from Payz itself. Our offer is on the Payz page.

What changed for Skrill and Neteller?

On 4 May 2023, crypto exchange CryptoOrange picked Paysafe as its exclusive payments partner. According to Paysafe, its payment methods include the wallets Skrill and Neteller.

On 10 May 2023, Paysafe launched an upgraded Skrill wallet for iGaming in Ontario. Players link a bank account, deposit by online bank transfer and, according to Paysafe, have the funds in their Skrill account in real time. The US version has been live since 2021 in all 26 American iGaming jurisdictions where Paysafe supports operators.

On 2 October 2023, Paysafe announced it had been named Payment Provider of the Year at the American Gambling Awards, citing among other things the Skrill wallet and its US VIP programme (Gambling.com). That mainly concerns US customers. More on Skrill and Neteller.

What happened at AstroPay?

On 24 May 2023 the Isle of Man regulator (FSA) issued AstroPay Global (IOM) Limited a licence for payment services and e-money (FSA). On 18 August 2023 AstroPay became Tottenham Hotspur’s official payment partner, with a Spurs-branded prepaid card and points on purchases (Tottenham Hotspur, Finance Magnates).

What did MiFinity win?

On 23 November 2023 the Payments Awards in London named MiFinity “Best Cross-Border Payments Service”. Judges pointed to open banking, virtual IBAN and eVouchers. According to MiFinity, PayAnyBank reaches more than 70 countries and the wallet comes in 21 languages and 17 currencies. These figures come from the provider. More on the MiFinity page and in MiFinity as a new eWO partner.

What does it mean for you?

Much of this touches you only indirectly: Ontario and the US award matter only if you play there. The Payz rebrand is more concrete: if you still have old ecoPayz links or receipts, that’s why they look different. Current terms and our bonus are on the provider pages.
