Skrill and Neteller customers in Germany can buy and sell crypto inside their wallet under EU rules. Paysafe, the company behind both brands, received a licence under MiCA, the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, from the Central Bank of Ireland.

What the licence covers

Paysafe announced the licence in April 2026. According to the Paysafe announcement:

  • It is a crypto-asset service provider (CASP) licence from the Central Bank of Ireland.
  • With one approval, Skrill and Neteller can passport crypto services to every country in the European Economic Area.
  • In Germany, Paysafe can now fully offer crypto services for the first time.
  • Paysafe calls Germany its largest digital wallet market in Europe.
Key figures: one licence from the Central Bank of Ireland, valid in 30 EEA countries, for Skrill and Neteller, announced in April 2026

Why Germany was a special case

Crypto has been part of Skrill since 2018 and Neteller followed later, but availability always depended on the country. Germany has strict national rules for crypto custody and trading, so German users often saw less than customers elsewhere. MiCA replaces the national patchwork with one EU rulebook. A provider licensed in one member state can serve the whole EEA, which is exactly what the Irish licence does for Skrill and Neteller.

The regulation itself is not new: MiCA, Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, has applied since 29 June 2023, and the rules for crypto service providers since 30 December 2024. Member states’ transitional periods end by 1 July 2026 at the latest.

Timeline: MiCA in force since 29 June 2023, stablecoin rules from 30 June 2024, rules for crypto service providers from 30 December 2024, transitional periods end by 1 July 2026 at the latest

What MiCA gives you

MiCA sets EU-wide duties for crypto providers: clear information on fees and risks, rules for holding customer assets, complaint handling and supervision by a national authority. It doesn’t make crypto less volatile, and it is not a deposit guarantee. Prices can still fall sharply.

What is still open

The announcement doesn’t list the coins, the fees or the exact day each feature reached German accounts. Check the crypto section in your Skrill or Neteller app to see what is live for your account. Compare the price shown before you confirm: wallet crypto services usually earn through the exchange spread, not through a visible fee.

Before you start

  • Only buy crypto with money you can leave alone for a while.
  • Check whether you can withdraw coins to an external wallet or only sell back inside the app.
  • Keep two-factor login switched on. A crypto balance is an attractive target.
